Danvers 8 - Salem 0
The Danvers Girls Varsity Soccer Team traveled to Salem Wednesday afternoon for an N.E.C. match. Danvers wasted no time in getting on the score board when junior Lila Doucette scored on an assist from senior Gianna Sutherland. Only 2 minutes later, freshman Kaia Glover scored off a feed from senior captain Georgia Prouty. Prouty added her own goal in the 12th minute off an assist from senior Maddie Shairs. Adding to the goal tallies was freshman Ali Doucette on a shot from distance, assisted by junior Addi McCarty. Sophomore Emma Sutherland rounded out the first half scoring on a goal set up by junior DeAnna Figueiredo. Senior Lizzie Owen made the defensive play of the game when a Salem attacker got through the Falcon defense and Owen was able to run her down from behind and make a goal saving tackle.
Danvers got solid first half play from seniors Maddie Shairs at striker, Kayla Houston at outside back, and Liv Page at forward. Defensively, Sabina Sturgeon and Lila Flynn played very well and very aggressive.
Only 2 minutes into the second half the Falcons struck for a 6th goal. Junior Claudia Drakos drilled a ball into the back of the net from over 20 yards out, unassisted. 5 minutes later, junior Lila Flynn crushed a ball off the post and into the net assisted by Prouty. Finally in the 12th minute of the second half, freshman Cassidy Randall scored a goal from distance on a second assist from Gianna Sutherland. With the game at 8-0, Danvers past the ball well and kept possession throughout the rest of the game. Senior captain and goalkeeper Maddie Dembowski only had to make 1 save on the day to post the Team's 4th shutout of the season. Junior, DeAnna Figueiredo came in late to play goalie for the final 15 minutes.
"This is such an unselfish Team and today they took that to another level. They shared the ball so well and it was great to see 8 different players score and a total of 12 players involved in the scoring. I thought senior Tabitha Sears had a terrific game for us at wing. She never stopped working and made some great passes to open teammates. Lizzie Owen also stepped up big time making that great defensive play in the first half and playing very steady in the back for us. We have a lot of big games coming up so hopefully this will spark our offense into many more goals in the near future."
Danvers improved to 8-1-1 on the season and next travel to Bishop Fenwick on Friday for their first non-league match of the season.
